ATLANTA (via Georgia Tech) – November 17, 2017 – Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business Dean Maryam Alavi has been named Woman of the Year for Mid-Size Organization and Educational Institution by Women In Technology (WIT). This award is presented to women in executive science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) roles who have made a meaningful impact in their community. The WIT Awards celebrate women and girls during the entire lifecycle of their STEAM careers and in their visionary efforts to transform the world of business and technology.

Alavi has served as the Dean of the Georgia Institute of Technology Scheller College of Business since 2014. Prior to her impact at Scheller College, Dean Alavi enjoyed an illustrious career as a researcher, scholar, mentor, and trailblazer in the field of information technology management. She is now transforming Scheller College into one of the leading technology-oriented business schools in the world.

Alavi is highly active in organizing, participating in, and driving initiatives to increase the inclusion and engagement of women and underrepresented minorities in business, as well as business and technology education. She regularly mentors undergraduate, masters, and Ph.D. business students on academic and career matters.

The WIT 2017 Women In Technology Awards ceremony was held on November 16, 2017 at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, Georgia.

As an expert in digital innovations and strategic IT applications, Maryam Alavi has authored numerous published papers and served on the editorial boards of several prestigious business and technology journals. She is a thought leader in IT strategy as well as a recognized educator and advisor with extensive experience in leadership development and organizational capability building for a digital age.

Dr. Alavi is a sought-after speaker at national and international forums and conferences and has taught in executive programs at some of the world’s most prestigious business schools. She has advised and taught executives on topics of IT and digital strategies and transformations in organizations including IBM, KIA Motors, Lockheed Martin, Marriott, Sodexo, Southern Company, the American College of Physicians, and the World Bank.

In recognition of her professional achievements, Dr. Alavi received the prestigious Association of Information Systems Fellows Award; an award given by peers in recognition of the recipient as a role model and inspiration to colleagues and students within the discipline.  She was also awarded the distinguished Marvin Bower Faculty Fellowship at Harvard Business School and recently received a Citation of Excellence Award from Emerald Publishing for her highly-cited paper based on novelty, interdisciplinary interest, and relevancy in today’s world. Dr. Alavi was selected as the 2017-2018 Woman of the Year by the Women in Technology Foundation of Georgia. This award celebrates women in their visionary efforts to transform the world of business and technology and recognizes Dr. Alavi’s accomplishments as a mentor, role model, and facilitator of women and men pursuing careers in STEM fields.

Dr. Alavi served on the advisory board of the Center for Knowledge-based Enterprise at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada, and was twice appointed by the Governor of the State of Georgia to the Georgia Technology Authority Board. She currently serves as a member of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Advisory Council of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and the International Advisory Board of the Politecnico di Milano School of Management in Italy.

Dr. Alavi holds a B.A. in mathematics and computer science from State University of New York at Buffalo, and both an M.S. in computer and information sciences and a Ph.D. in management information systems from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
